TITLE: Vice President of Operations
DEPARTMENT: Operations
REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer
COMPENSATION: 130,000 – 160,000
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Vice President of Operations is a pivotal role within the organization that ties multiple departments of the Space Foundation together. The VP of Operations is responsible for overall logistical support to all headquarters personnel and functions, as well as operational support to ensure the success of two organizational divisions (Symposium 365 and the Center of Innovation and Education). As such, they provide direction and leadership in the areas of customer relations, external events, information technology, volunteer resources, facilities, and infrastructure. They pursue organizational alignment with values, mission, and vision through relationship building, staff development, role modeling, and the implementation of organizational policies and procedures. The VP of Operations also plays a critical role in leadership within the organization’s emergency management plans.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following briefly describes representative responsibilities of this job but is not intended to be a complete or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of this position.
  • Provides oversight to maintain All Space Foundation real estate, facilities, and infrastructure. Facilities include Space Foundation Headquarters, the Space Foundation Discovery Center, Space Foundation Washington, D.C., office, and temporary work locations such as The Broadmoor during the annual Space Symposium
  • Works with Facilities Director in the areas of construction, renovation, improvements, and system upgrades, including information technology, HVAC, security, maintenance, and janitorial
  • Provides project management support to lead the headquarters support team for all major Symposium 365 events (including the annual Space Symposium)
  • Provides functional support and management for all required Center for Innovation and Education (CI&E) events and initiatives
  • Provides assessment and recommendations for operational improvement of support activities.
  • Manages the budget for subordinate support assets, to efficiently conduct day-to-day operations and execute support requirements
  • Upholds, promotes and encourages the desired organizational culture
  • Participates in organizational problem-solving, decision making and strategic planning
  • Leads and manages the Operations team functions and performance by developing people and processes that support the organizational vision, mission, and culture
  • Works with Information Technology Director in the areas of system upgrades and software, integration, cyber security, and digital platform development.
  • Represents the Foundation in property association and condo association boards
  • Provides support, oversight, and direction to the Operations team to ensure optimal operations
  • Builds, develops and improves processes and procedures to support the strategic direction
  • Provide timely and accurate analyses of budgets, project proposals, cash flow, and trends in the multiple Operations areas
  • Assesses property, casualty, and other business insurance needs and executes contracts to ensure adequate coverage to protect mission assets
  • Enhances and/or develops, implements, and enforces policies and procedures to improve the overall operational efficiency of the Space Foundation
  • Works with key stakeholders to maintain SF processes and policies regarding day-to-day operations and safety protocols
  • Leads the Emergency Action Plan process using information gained from the previous training exercises and up-to-date hazard and vulnerability assessments to develop and update the Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • Oversees EAP training processes for Space Foundation staff members
  • Performing other duties and projects as may be assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
The following briefly describes the knowledge, skills, abilities, and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification, or a combination thereof:
  • Bachelor's Degree, 6-8 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough understanding of general facilities oversight and project management principles, including any applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations
  • Certification as a Project Manager or applicable industry experience in leading large, complex projects and/or events
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial documents, reports, and correspondence.
  • Diplomatically responds to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community
  • Effectively presents information to management, team members, and/or boards of directors
  • Possesses effective relationship-building and interpersonal skills
  • Organized and effective in managing multiple competing priorities
  • Ability to quickly grasp new concepts and implement as directed
  • Attends to all details of a project, regardless of scope
  • Exhibits strong leadership style and ability to effectively mentor and develop staff
  • Ability to build partnerships with internal and external staff and organizations.

Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for them. Necessary office furnishings, equipment, and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time to time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
JOB STATUS:
  • FLSA Classification: This position is exempt per guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
  • Full- or Part-Time: This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule consisting of 40 hours per week.
  • Work Location: This position’s primary work site is the headquarters location in Colorado Springs, CO. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is not eligible for alternative worksite arrangements, such as telecommuting.
